A chat room is an online forum where people can chat online (talk by broadcasting messages to people on the same forum in real time). Sometimes these venues are moderated either by limiting who is allowed to speak (not common), or by having moderation volunteers patrol the venue watching for disruptive or otherwise undesirable behavior.

GOOD PRACTICES:
  • Choose your screen name carefully
    • not gender specific
    • do not include age, birthday or birthyear
    • do not include your school's name, sports team or other info that places your geographically
  • go through each buddy that your child has on his/her list
    • do not allow them to have friends of friends who they personally don't know
  • For younger users go to preferences and set that only preapproved senders may IM your child.
  • Learn IM terms and lingo that kids might use.
