BLOGS & SOCIAL NETWORKING PLACES
What is a Blog?
From Wikipedia
"A blog (or weblog ) is a website that is used in the manner of an online journal. Like other media , blogs often focus on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news. Some blogs function as online diaries . A typical blog combines text, images , and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Since its appearance in 1995, blogging has emerged as a popular means of communication, affecting public opinion and mass media around the world."
ISSUES WITH SOCIAL NETWORKING PLACES:
- Children might share too much personal information
(full name, address, birth date, pictures, school name, phone numbers). This information can be used to track them, lure them into meeting predators or steal their identity.
- Every little personal information could be used by a predator to make a connection with your child
- Children might make up a personality (age, more mature) which make other older bloggers believe they are interacting with a peer not a minor.
- Schools, universities and potential employers are increasingly checking for postings.

What is "grooming" ?
According to Blogsafety.com "Grooming" is the way sexual predators get from bad intentions to sexual exploitation. Basically, grooming is manipulation. It's the process pedophiles use to get children they target online to meet with them offline, the simple goal being sex. |

|
GOOD PRACTICES:
- Don't give out your real name, geographical location, phone number or any information that places you at a certain time at a certain place.
- Make sure your children know that TheirSpace is YourSpace too. They should not expect the same privacy an intimate diary under their pillow receives from you.
- Periodically visit and talk to your child about their blog and their friend's blog.
- Go through each individual "friend" and let them tell you their name and where they know them from.
- Discuss and point out possible dangers that their "friends" are posting online. It is their responsibility to tell their friends if they are posting information 3
- Keep reminding them that they can ALWAYS come to you if there is something that they feel uncomfortable with that they encountered while blogging.

WHAT IS MYSPACE.COM?
from Wikipedia
"MySpace is a social networking web site offering an interactive network of photos, blogs , user profiles, groups, and an internal e-mail system"
My Space replaced the popular XANGA as THE place to have your personal blog to share with your friends. Teenagers (members should be 14 years and up) measure their "popularity" by how many "friends" they have on their list.(Notice the change in meaning of the words in quotations). The site is also popular with college students as well as other young adults.
