WHAT IS A WEBQUEST

According to WikiPedia, "in education , WebQuest.... is a research activity in which students collect information, where most of the information comes from the World Wide Web . It was first invented by Bernie Dodge in 1995 ."

STEPS OF DEVELOPING A WEBQUEST
  • Select a topic or theme that fits your curriculum and  standards.
  • Become familiar with web sites in your content area. Start collecting by selecting and bookmarking interesting sites.
  • Select a task for your students to accomplish. If you need help or inspiration check out WebQuest Taskonomy: A Taxonomy of Tasks
  • Make a list of each step students need to take in the process of accomplishing the task you set for them.
  • Create a rubric to show students how you will evaluate them.
  • Design your web pages or use a pre-made template.
  • Upload the pages to the Internet or follow the wizard from your template.

You can search the thousands of teacher created webquests online and adapt them to fit your own students and curriculum.

    • google.com and enter keywords such as "webquest", "Science", "atoms", "6th grade" (Subject, Topic, Grade level")
    • Search the large database of webquest.org

HOW TO DESIGN YOUR INDIVIDUAL PAGES AND GET YOUR WEBQUEST ON THE WEB

In order for your students to work on the webquest, you will need to create HTML files and upload these files to the web.

  1. QuestGarden
    Authoring tool and hosting site. QuestGarden will allow you to create a solid WebQuest without any need to know web editing or uploading. Free until September 2006, after that there will be a minimal fee.
  2. You can use very easy step- by- step templates from sites like
    Geocities , TeacherWeb or Web Worksheet Wizard . The only thing you will need to do is import (copy & paste) the text you created for each section, name your files and upload through their wizards.
  3. Use WebQuest Templates from Bernie Dodge then upload to your hosting company.

  4. If you have created web pages before or want a little bit more freedom beyond a pre-fabricated template, you can also use WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) Editors like Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage.
